Missoula Electric Cooperative (MEC) was formed in 1936 by a group of members who were seeking to improve their lives and the lives of their communities through providing much-needed electricity. With this tradition of local ownership and local control, we have a vested interest in seeing that our communities grow and thrive. In other words, for MEC to stay true to our mission and values, it is vitally important we stay close to you, our members, to ensure we are continuing to respond to your needs. Recently, MEC adopted a retooled Mission Statement that reads as follows:
“Our business is providing energy. Our mission is serving our members”
Additionally, our Statement of Values indicates that serving our members requires not only a commitment to the community but also the involvement of our greatest asset – our employees. Whether it’s coaching little league, serving on the school board, participating in a community service organization, or fund-raising for a charity in need, your co-op is committed to improving the quality of life in our community, and it all begins with our dedicated employees.
One tremendous example of giving back has become an annual tradition with the MEC Tree Trimming Crew. For the past few years, these individuals have challenged their coworkers and directors at the co-op to donate turkeys as part of the Cherry Creek Radio Holiday Turkey Drive. Last year over 103 turkeys was donated through their efforts. The number of requests for financial assistance or participation in community events is significant at MEC,
and coordinating our efforts to maximize our effectiveness can be a challenge. For this reason, MEC has assembled a group of willing employees to participate on a newly developed committee, appropriately named, the Community
Service Committee, or CSC.
The primary goal of the CSC is to prioritize, coordinate and encourage volunteer opportunities for MEC and its employees. Sharing our time and talents by giving back to the communities that we serve is not only rewarding, it can also be a lot of fun. An added benefit is that the diversity of the committee brings together members of various departments to focus on a common goal, thus encouraging teamwork throughout our organization.
